Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept animals?

We accept animals that are found or need to be surrendered by their owner within East Baton Rouge Parish. There is a small fee if you are looking to surrender an animal that helps cover the cost of veterinary and care expenses. If you can no longer keep your pet, visit our PASS program page to learn more about how you can help find your animal a new home. PLEASE NOTE: APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR PET SURRENDERS. Make an appointment here.

Are you no-kill?

Companion Animal Alliance (CAA) is the only open admission shelter for East Baton Rouge Parish accepting around 9,500 animals annually. CAA accepts every unwanted, lost, and homeless animal as part of our organization’s mission. CAA does euthanize animals, and these decisions are made by several people within CAA’s team. The animal’s quality-of-life and public safety is always at the core of the organization’s actions.

How long do you hold animals?

CAA holds all animals that come in as strays, public drop offs, or animal control pickups for 3-5 days, dependent on signs of ownership.  After this time period, CAA gains ownership and evaluates animals behaviorally and medically to see if they are a candidate for our adoption program.  All cats that do not have positive, traceable identification through a currently registered microchip (RFID), license tag, or private identification tag may be assessed by a veterinarian, sterilized immediately upon intake, vaccinated against rabies, ear-tipped, and released as a community cat in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Ordinances.

How do I make a monetary donation to CAA?

Donations of any denomination are accepted on our site, via check payable to CAA mailed to 2550 Gourrier Avenue Baton Rouge, LA 70820, or in person at our shelter open 7 days a week between 10am-5pm. Please contact the Director of Development at morgant@caabr.org with any questions regarding making a donation to CAA.

I LOST MY PET. WHAT DO I DO?

For lost pets, there is no substitute for you visiting the shelter yourself! All animals picked up by Animal Control are delivered to CAA. Our address, hours, and other helpful tips for finding a lost pet can be found on the Lost Pets section of our website.

What donations does CAA accept besides monetary donations?

There are many things that the shelter always needs, and they're on our Amazon Wish List. We always accept new and lightly used towels and blankets, dog treats, wet food, cleaning supplies, newspaper and much more!

Can I bring my animal in for veterinary services?

Due to parish ordinances CAA cannot provide any veterinary services for animals outside of CAA’s care.  We recommend speaking with friends and family to find the best fit for your veterinary needs. If you are looking for more information on spay/neuter, please visit our resources tab for more information.

Sec. 14:207

The veterinary services provided through the animal shelter and Companion Animal Alliance, at the animal shelter, shall be limited to animals which are impounded or seized under the legal authority of the city-parish, and shall not be performed on animals which have not been impounded or seized under the legal custody of the animal control and rescue center or animal shelter.
